What to Expect in Your First Session With a Dietitian

If you are nervous about your first dietitian appointment, here is exactly what happens. A conversation, not an interrogation, with no judgment and no weigh-in.

It is a conversation, not an interrogation

If you are picturing a clipboard, a list of everything you ate, and someone deciding whether you have been good or bad, please let that picture go. A first session is really just a conversation. You talk, I listen, and we get to know each other a little. There is no test to pass and no wrong answers. Many people arrive nervous, especially if past experiences with food or with health professionals have felt cold or shaming, and that is completely understandable. My job in the first hour is mostly to make it feel safe to be honest.

No weigh-in unless you choose it

This is a non-diet, weight-inclusive practice, which means we do not need a number on a scale to do meaningful work together. There is no routine weigh-in. If weight is not clinically necessary, it simply does not come up. In the rare situation where it might be relevant for your health, we would talk about it first, you would always know why, and you could decline. Your body is not something you have to display or justify here. You are welcome exactly as you are.

What we actually talk about

The first session usually circles around your relationship with food rather than a calorie count. We might explore what is feeling hard right now, what brought you here, and a bit of your history, including any dieting, restriction, or disordered eating you have lived through. We talk about what you are hoping for, your day-to-day life, your energy, and what eating feels like emotionally, not just physically. You share as much or as little as you are ready to. We move at your pace, and nothing is dragged out of you.

You will not leave with a meal plan

I know some people expect to walk away with a printed plan telling them what to eat. That is not how this works, and that is on purpose. Rigid meal plans tend to feed the same all-or-nothing cycle that brought many people to my door in the first place. Instead, the first session is about understanding your situation clearly so that any support that follows actually fits your real life. The goal is more trust and more ease with food, not another set of rules to follow or fail.

How the virtual part works

Sessions are fully virtual, which means we meet by secure video from wherever you are in Canada. You do not need to travel, find parking, or sit in a waiting room. You just need a private-ish spot, a device with a camera, and an internet connection. You will get a simple link to click at our appointment time. A first session usually runs around an hour, with follow-ups often a little shorter, and we figure out a rhythm that suits you rather than a fixed schedule imposed on you.

And the free call comes first

One thing that takes the pressure off entirely: a free introductory call comes before any of this. It is a short, no-cost, no-obligation chat where you can ask questions, get a feel for whether we are a good fit, and decide in your own time. Nothing is committed and nothing is sold to you. If you are curious or even just a bit nervous, that call is a gentle, low-stakes place to start, and you are warmly welcome to book one whenever you feel ready.

Questions

I have a history of disordered eating and I am anxious. Is that okay?

More than okay. You are exactly who this kind of care is for. There is no judgment, no weigh-in by default, and no pressure to share more than you want to. We go gently and at your pace, and you can tell me at any point if something feels like too much.

Do I need to track my food or prepare anything beforehand?

No. You do not need to log meals, bring records, or prepare anything. Just come as you are. If anything would help me understand your situation, we sort that out together, and only in a way that feels supportive rather than like surveillance.

If any of this sounds like you

The first call is free, and there is no pressure to continue. It is just a calm conversation about what you are looking for.
